Bio

Scott A. Wilber (a.k.a. great pig) is a San Francisco artist creating in many mediums and fields. He is currently a painter and sculptor, a set designer and scenic painter and a freelance illustrator. He has also taught visual arts at the middle school level since 1996.

Most recently Scott has been using found wood-shelves and cabinetry as the base for his work, using the sections created by the disassembling of the shelves and adding to the many layers of “life” in the original paintwork to inform the the story he wishes to tell.

Scott’s new pieces use icons, symbols and characters that are derived from popular culture influences from his childhood in the suburbs, things that have long influenced his work. He draws from comic books and television — Saturday morning cartoons and old B&W shows — to create a graphic, cartoon quality and uses the structure of the found cabinetry to “contain” a story within the framework of the box. Each “contained” story is similar to the chapters of a comic or a 30 minute TV show with a wrap up ending — the full story lives within the snapshot of the section.

Scott has been designing and building sets and scenic painting since 2000 for San Francisco theatre companies such as 42nd Street Moon, New Conservatory Theatre Center, and Live Oak Drama Productions. As a freelance illustrator he’s worked on Accounts for Target and Disney, Town Square Graphics, Urban Re:Vision, DMNA and Valentino Landscaping.
